While resources are often helpful and inspiring, don’t be afraid to take time with just a bible, without notes or commentary. Read and listen to what God is saying to you. One way to try this:
- pick a verse or passage and read it through
- stop and ask God to show you any word(s) he wants to bring to your attention. Don’t be afraid to quietly wait for an impression.
- read the passage again
- stop and ask God what it is he wants you to realize about Christ from the words he’s drawn to your attention
- read the passage a third time
- stop and ask for God to show how he wants those words to affect your life
